Benefits of Aluminium Wall Copings Vs Stone Copings
When compared to stone wall copings, aluminium copings are lightweight, strong, available in a wide range of colours and are also quick and easy to install. Aluminium as a material also allows greater versatility in design.
How to Install Aluminium Copings
Our aluminium wall copings are typically fixed to 18mm WBP plywood or fibre cement backing boards. The use of backing boards ensures a level background for the coping brackets to be fixed. Coping brackets should be spaced at maximum 1.5m centres and one at each joint abutment. After two beads of silicone sealant (code SU1) have been applied to the brackets, the coping panels are offered over the brackets and clicked into place hiding all fixings.
How to Cut Aluminium Coping Profiles
We recommend the use of an angle grinder with a 1mm wide metal cutting blade. It is crucial that the blade is dipped intotallowwhich will lubricate the blade, preventing burrs and providing a neat cut. Any slight burrs can be taken off with a file.
Skill saws, jig saws and mitre saws with metal cutting blades are also typically used to cut items down to size.
Touch up paint, part code SU6, should be neatly applied to cut edges to protect the aluminium and also provide an aesthetically pleasing finish.
Are angles/falls required?
Traditionally, lime coping stones often stained the outside of building facades due to small deposits of calcium carbonate washing off the stones within the rainfall. In order to prevent staining, coping stones have a slight angle/fall back towards the roof. Aluminium copings do not contain any microparticles within the material that will cause staining. This means that the copings can be installed perfectly flat however, If still desired, small packers can be placed under one end of the coping brackets during installation to achieve a slight fall.
All of our polyester powder coated aluminium wall copings are non combustible and have a fire class rating of A2-s1,d0. This means that they are suitable for unlimited use on residential and commercial properties including high rise balconies.
Should the coping panels be used in visible areas (terraces, balconies, garden walls etc) the products can be easily cleaned with a soap and water solution. Wipe the surfaces down with a damp cloth then dry with a microfibre cloth for a streak free finish. This will also prolong the life of the powder coated finish.
